WordMusic - well what else do you call it? Its a way of combining
two passions - spoken word and song - usually the two are
mutually exclusive however a verandah, a guitar and a distinct
lack of singing ability drove the combination.
The result is a unique form of Australian story telling,
which carries the lyric and strong narrative of poetry and
combines it with the emotive power of music and song. The
trick is in the balance, and the fine line between the poetry
maintaining its integrity without the listener requiring more
melody from the song, and the song and structure still having
its own 'life' and space.
This project has been the love-child of Andrew and Tamworth
based musician, Leigh ivin. Teaming up as an impromptu support
for Brisbane artist, Jackie Marshall, the musician and poet
found common ground in Word Music and the project was born.
The next twelve months saw a lot of planning, writing and
practicing with the first demo's being recorded at the Gidgee
Guesthouse in Bourke in December 07.
The bulk of the project was recorded in Tamworth at Leigh's
makeshift studio in 'the Tobacco Shed' on drummer and collaborator,
Ronny Rindo's property on Moore Creek. The band for the project
included Andrew, Leigh, Ronny and bassist Adam Bodkin along
with a host of technical superstars including Gleny Rae Virus
on fiddle, Shaun Butcher (aka Uncle Burnin Luuurv) on Banjo
and none other than Australian Blues great Chris Wilson on
Harmonica.
Scheduled for release late in 08 contact Andrew to learn
more about the new Word Music album, 'Western Stream' from
Andrew Hull.
